The Citrus Project is a collective artistic initiative driven by a group of international artists closely connected to the curatorial trajectory of Vicente Todolí, founder of Todolí Citrus Fundació. Conceived as a gesture of collaboration and support, the project establishes a dialogue between contemporary art and nature, taking the world of citrus as its conceptual and symbolic point of departure.

Coordinated by Lucía Muñoz Iglesias, the initiative brings together works by fourteen artists — Mirosław Bałka, Tacita Dean, Nan Goldin, Paul Graham, Carsten Höller, Roni Horn, Cristina Iglesias, Ragnar Kjartansson, Julie Mehretu, Cildo Meireles, Matt Mullican, Antoni Muntadas, Philippe Parreno and Julião Sarmento — whose careers have intersected with Todolí’s over more than four decades.

The Citrus Project takes the form of a limited edition of 32 boxes containing works by these fourteen artists. Seventeen of these boxes are intended for sale, fourteen were allocated to the participating artists, and one forms part of the Todolí Citrus Fundació collection.

Each edition comprises works in different formats and media, including photography, printmaking and silkscreen, and combines pieces common to the entire edition with unique works or specific variations for each box. In several cases, the artists introduce deliberate differences between editions, emphasising the notion of singularity.

Many of the works establish explicit or subtle connections with the world of citrus, agriculture, the laboratory, the garden, or the observation of the passage of time. Others do so from a more metaphorical perspective, addressing ideas such as memory, belonging or transformation. Together, they form a narrative that directly engages with the Foundation’s project and the personal bond with Todolí.

The funds generated through the sale of The Citrus Project are entirely devoted to supporting the activity of Todolí Citrus Fundació: a botanical orchard and research centre dedicated to the study, conservation and dissemination of citrus biodiversity, as well as agricultural, environmental, historical and cultural research related to this field.

Beyond its material form as an artistic edition, The Citrus Project stands as an expression of the ongoing dialogue between contemporary creation and territory, and as an example of how citrus — as a crop, a living archive and a cultural landscape — continues to inspire artists, creators and thinkers from multiple perspectives.
