The Imperial Lemon (Citrus limon× C. paradisi) is a hybrid between Lemon and Grapefruit. It takes this name from its presence in Kew Gardens (London, UK). Its origin is not known, although it is most likely the result of a natural hybridization selected during the 19th century. The trees are vigorous and the flowers form clusters of soft aroma. It is also known as Lipo.
The fruit is large, like a Grapefruit, and is a good example of the result of hybridization between two citrus fruits, as it maintains characteristics of both. While the rind is of medium thickness and maintains the uses of the Lemon (zest, cocktails…), its pulp is juicy, like that of a Grapefruit, but somewhat more acidic. Its juice is more reminiscent of Lemon.
