Art at Todolí Citrus Fundació

Todolí Citrus Fundació was born from the desire to preserve, research, and share the extraordinary diversity of the citrus world. Yet, its roots are deeply intertwined with art. It could not be otherwise: its founder, Vicente Todolí, has devoted much of his professional life to curating and directing international museums, making art a way of understanding and engaging with the world.

From the outset, the Foundation has conceived citrus fruits not only as objects of scientific or agricultural study but also as a source of aesthetic, symbolic, and cultural knowledge. In Todolí’s vision, the orchard is both a laboratory and a museum — a space where art and nature complement and dialogue with one another organically.

This connection becomes visible throughout the orchard, with works such as Carsten Höller’s aviary or Jorge Peris’s sculpture Fuente Citrus Deliciosa. It also extends into the Foundation’s facilities, where contemporary art coexists with trees, architecture, and research processes. Over the years, Todolí Citrus Fundació has assembled a collection of contemporary art shaped by the generosity of artists who wished to be part of the project. Many of these works have been donated by internationally renowned creators such as Silvia Bächli, Lothar Baumgarten, Xu Bing, Carmen Calvo, Maurizio Cattelan, Joan Jonas, Attilio Maranzano, Miralda, Nicolás Ortigosa, Jorge Peris, Jürgen Schadeberg, Alessandra Spranzi, and Juan Uslé, among others.

The dialogue between art and citrus has also inspired philanthropic initiatives such as The Citrus Project, a limited edition of works created by fourteen internationally acclaimed artists — Mirosław Bałka, Tacita Dean, Nan Goldin, Paul Graham, Carsten Höller, Roni Horn, Cristina Iglesias, Ragnar Kjartansson, Julie Mehretu, Cildo Meireles, Matt Mullican, Antoni Muntadas, Philippe Parreno, and Julião Sarmento — coordinated by Lucía Muñoz Iglesias. The funds raised are entirely dedicated to supporting the Foundation’s research and conservation activities, reaffirming the idea that art can also be a form of patronage and sustainability.

The future of this dialogue between art and nature takes shape in the creation of Espai Citrus, an exhibition pavilion with museum-quality conditions designed to house and share the Citrus in Art collection, developed in both physical and digital formats. This new project, conceived in collaboration between architect Carlos Salazar and artist Antoni Miralda, aims to create a permanent space where art, botany, and research continue to intertwine as inseparable parts of the Foundation’s vision.

The Citrus deliciosa is a highly aromatic, sweet, and juicy mandarin variety, whose tree is characterized by thinner and more elongated leaves than those of other mandarins.

This variety gives its name to Fountain Citrus Deliciosa, a work by the artist Jorge Peris (Alzira, 1969), recently donated to Todolí Citrus Fundació, and now part of the Foundation’s permanent collection.

Peris chose as its site a small, disused irrigation pond next to an abandoned section of a traditional water channel, integrating these existing elements into a new circulation of water. In doing so, he restores the memory of the traditional irrigation system, creating a space for contemplation and leisure.

This project, created by artist Antoni Miralda, has been made possible thanks to the generosity of both the artist himself and the gallerist Moisés Pérez de Albéniz — the former as author of the work and the latter as the sponsor responsible for its production. Together, they have materialized this edition as a gift to Todolí Citrus Fundació.

It is a work conceived for direct sale through the Foundation, all income will be dedicated to supporting its research, educational, and outreach activities.
