Most tangelos have been developed within breeding programs and are the result of controlled crossings between tangerines and grapefruits. The Minneola tangelo was obtained from the crossing of a Dancy tangerine and a Duncan grapefruit; it has been marketed since 1931 and is named after a city in Florida (USA). It is characterized by producing fruits with a distinctive neck that gives them a bell-shaped appearance, which is why it has also been marketed as Honeybell.
Tree and fruit description
Vigorous tree, with an open habit and spherical morphology. Highly productive. Leaves with winged petioles. Medium-large fruit with a basal neck that gives it a pear-shaped morphology and a flat apex. Smooth and thick bark, of intense orange color and easy to peel. Melting pulp, bright orange in color, juicy. Marked tangerine flavor, with hints of grapefruit that are better appreciated when consumed as juice. It may contain some seeds.
Uses
Variety mainly for fresh consumption, with a great tradition as a winter gift in Florida.
