ORIGIN DATA:

Pummelo Valentine is a hybrid obtained within the program for the creation of new varieties at the University of California Riverside (USA). The objective was to obtain a hybrid similar to grapefruit but with anthocyanin pigmentation, as opposed to the lycopenes typical of pummelos and grapefruits. For this purpose, the low-acid Pummelo “Siamese Sweet” was crossed with a hybrid between a “Ruby” blood orange and the Dancy mandarin. The crosses were made in the 1950s, the selection of the hybrid in the 1970s, and the commercial introduction at the beginning of the 21st century. It owes its name to the fact that, in California, the optimum ripening time is in mid-February, around Valentine’s Day, as well as to the red heart shape of the fruit cut lengthwise.

TREE AND FRUIT DESCRIPTION:

The fruits are medium-large in size, with a smooth rind of an intense yellow, almost orange color. Very juicy, sweet and fruity pulp, with intense hints of berries.

USES:

Perfect both for fresh consumption, even in salads, and for the preparation of juices.
