ORIGIN DATA:

The Oni Yuzu hybrid is of uncertain origin, although it originated in China and brought to Japan in the 8th century, where it became established and popularized to some extent. It is not a true Yuzu, and is most likely not even a hybrid of Yuzu or other Papeda, but of Pummelo and Citron, as shown by the phenotype of both the plant and its fruits. Its names Oni (demon) and Shishi (lion) refer to guardians against evil in Asian culture, and that is why Oni Yuzu fruits are placed at the entrance of homes and businesses in the transition to the New Year.

TREE AND FRUIT DESCRIPTION:

Moderately vigorous tree, with erect growth and no-thorns. Leaves with pummelo-type winged petiole. Large fruits, of varied morphologies, between round and ovoid. Rind very rough and aromatic, thick and dark yellow when ripe. Pulp not very juicy, crunchy, with acid and slightly bitter juice at first, sweeter and slightly bitter at full maturity. Few or no seeds.

USES:

Hybrid with ornamental value. The fruits are used for decoration and flavoring. Its fruits are used for candied fruits, jams and other sweet preparations. The juice vesicles are a good accompaniment to seafood. Its juice is used in the beer and liquor industry.
