Sour Oranges and their hybrids

November – May

ORIGIN DATA:

Bergamot trees are the result of a natural hybridization between Sour Orange and a Lemon, which is why they show such richness and depth in their aromas. Bergamot Mellarosa owes its name to the fact that it has an aroma reminiscent of roses. It is a historical variety because it was already present in the Medici gardens of the 17th century.

TREE AND FRUIT DESCRIPTION:

It is a small tree, vigorous and very productive. Oblong leaves, rounded and obtuse (the beam folds over the central nerve) and with a particular aroma. Medium-sized fruits, predominantly globular in shape and rather flattened poles, although many are irregular. Since ancient times it has been recognized for its “star-shaped” morphology. Rind characterized by the outer longitudinal ribs, which correspond to the septa that separate the segments. It is soft yellow in color and very aromatic. Pale yellow flesh, juicy, bitter, but with a pleasant flavor and aroma. It has some seeds.

USES:

Its leaves can be used to flavor drinks, as well as its rind. The juice can be an interesting and complex condiment, as a substitute for table lemon. The tree has ornamental value.
