When, in the midst of research, I discovered that Cosimo de Medici was the first citrus fruit collector, I saw the relationship between citrus and art.
The citrus collection
The core of the Foundation is the Citrus Collection that the Botanical Garden el Bartolí keeps under its protection.
El Bartolí is the headquarters of the Foundation. This orchard located in Palmera (Valencia), a small town on the Mediterranean coast with approximately 1000 inhabitants, is home to what is possibly the world’s largest collection of citrus fruits grown outdoors with about 500 varieties at present.
Citrus fruits are grouped into twelve varietal groups: Citrons, Zamboas (Pummelos), Mandarins, Papaya, Sweet Oranges, Bitter Oranges, Lemons, Lime, Grapefruit, Australian Citrus, Kumquats and Trifoliate. The Citrus Collection housed at El Bartolí contains varieties of all these varietal groups, with representatives from all citrus growing areas of the world. During guided visits to the Foundation, we make this biodiversity accessible to all interested parties.
This section is dedicated to unraveling and presenting the richness of the varieties that make up this special citrus collection. From the refreshing and juicy mandarins to the exotic and rare Australian limes, through the wide spectrum of flavors offered by citrons, pummelos, lemons, and limes.
In addition, we explore the delicious grapefruits, the tiny but potent kumquats, and the little-known paprika, without leaving aside those varieties that, although related to citrus, are presented as unique hybrids.
Our goal is to provide you with a complete and detailed overview of these fruits, which are indispensable in the gastronomy and culture of many parts of the world. + info
