Throughout history, the cultivation of citrus fruits has fascinated conquerors, emperors and philosophers. It originated in the Far East, and while Alexander the Great brought it to Europe, it was the Italian and French Renaissance who popularised its cultivation. This interest has reached the present day thanks to foundations such as Todolí Citrus, which, with more than 400 varieties, aspires to become the largest living citrus library.

Vicente Todolí, founder of the foundation, is a peculiar man. An art historian, the former director of the Tate Modern in London and the Serralves Foundation in Porto boasts of his collection, and not just of paintings. ‘Right now we have 400 varieties of citrus fruits. Our aim is to study them botanically, historically and anthropologically, and we try to disseminate not only knowledge, but also their use in gastronomy and in other fields such as medicine,’ he explains.
