ORIGIN DATA:

Most tangelos have been obtained within breeding programs, and are the result of controlled crosses between Mandarin and Grapefruit . The Minneola Tangelo was obtained after a cross between a Dancy mandarin and a Duncan grapefruit, was marketed in 1931 and named after a city in Florida (USA). It is characterized by producing fruits with a characteristic neck that gives it a bell-shaped appearance, hence it has also been marketed as Honeybell.

TREE AND FRUIT DESCRIPTION:

Vigorous tree, of open growing and spherical morphology. Very productive. Leaves with winged petiole. Medium-large fruit, with basal neck that gives it a pyriform morphology and flat apical area. Smooth and thick rind, intense orange color and easy peeling. Melting flesh, bright orange, juicy. Marked tangerine flavor, with reminiscences of grapefruit best appreciated when consumed as juice. Some seeds may be present.

USES:

Variety mainly for fresh consumption, with great tradition as a winter gift in Florida.
